A young Irish swimmer has tragically died after collapsing at the finish line of the Cork City Marathon.
Ellen Cassidy, a 24-year-old from Old Mallow Road in Cork City, was one of over 11,000 participants in Sunday’s full and half marathon events, as well as the 10k race.
After completing the half marathon, she fell ill near the finish line on St. Patrick’s Street around 1 pm.
Emergency medical personnel treated Ms. Cassidy at the scene before transporting her by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.
Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after.
Ms. Cassidy was a renowned swimmer and a member of the Dolphin Swimming Club. She proudly represented Ireland at the European Youth Olympics in 2015 and the European Junior Championships in 2018.
Her athletic achievements also included representing Ireland at the international schools level and participation in the Mardyke Arena UCC Emerging Talent Programme in 2018.
The Cork City Marathon organisers released a statement expressing their condolences: “Cork City Council is deeply saddened to confirm that a participant in the Cork City Marathon has tragically passed away.
"The person was attended to immediately by the emergency services on the scene. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.”
