Last month, local students participating in the EU-funded CLYP project at ATU Letterkenny gained valuable leadership skills.

The CLYP (Civic Labs for Young People) project, designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders, hosted an engaging workshop at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) for students from Karen Murphy School of Speech, Drama and Communications. The workshop focused on the connection between leadership abilities and community development.

The CLYP project aims to empower young people to become proactive community leaders by equipping them with resources to develop effective leadership strategies. This collaborative European initiative seeks innovative approaches to youth leadership. It acknowledges the unique perspectives and energy that young people can contribute to positive community change when given the right support and direction.

Michael Murphy, Donegal GAA men’s senior captain and Head of Sport at ATU Donegal, inaugurated the workshop by sharing his leadership experiences both on and off the sports field. His presentation offered the students valuable insights and guidance on responsibility, teamwork, and motivating others to achieve shared objectives.

Subsequently, the CLYP team at ATU led the students through interactive exercises and discussions aimed at identifying individual leadership strengths and exploring avenues for community involvement. The students actively participated in the discussions, leveraging their natural communication skills and creative thinking to contribute to lively conversations about youth engagement and local development initiatives.

The partnership between ATU and Karen Murphy School of Speech, Drama and Communications demonstrates the CLYP project’s dedication to establishing enduring collaborations that support ongoing youth development. Plans are already in progress for follow-up sessions, inspired by the ideas generated during the workshop.
