Taoiseach Michéal Martin has voiced his disappointment that Mohammad Ayyad, the primary suspect in the murder of Donegal soldier Seán Rooney, remains at large.
Yesterday, a Military Tribunal in Beirut reached a verdict regarding the murder of UN Peacekeeper Private Seán Rooney in Lebanon in December 2022, convicting several individuals.
Pte. Rooney, 24, originally from Dundalk and a former resident of Newtowncunningham, was killed when the armoured vehicle in which he was travelling was attacked with gunfire.
Mohammad Ayyad, the central defendant in the proceedings, received a death sentence, but was tried in absentia.
Mr. Martin stated, “While I acknowledge the conviction of the principal defendant, it is unacceptable that he has not yet been apprehended. Furthermore, many will perceive the sentences meted out to the other defendants as excessively lenient.”
He continued, “The Lebanese justice system, and the protracted delays experienced in this case, are deeply regrettable.”
Mr. Martin conveyed his sympathies to Pte. Rooney’s mother, Natasha.
“Seán was a soldier of exceptional bravery, who consistently prioritized the safety of others over his own while serving in the line of duty.”
“He demonstrated courage and dedication. My thoughts and prayers are with Natasha, his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD, Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Defence, expressed his solidarity with the family of Seán Rooney.
He noted that the delays they have faced in seeking justice in the years since the incident have undoubtedly compounded their grief.
“The killing of Seán Rooney serves as a stark reminder of the significant risks faced by members of the Defence Forces when deployed on international peacekeeping missions under the Irish flag and the UN banner,” Deputy Ó Laoghaire stated.
“This is something we must never forget and should always appreciate. At just 24 years of age, in his efforts to safeguard others, Seán Rooney made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.”
“The premature loss of Seán Rooney’s life is an unspeakable tragedy. While today is undoubtedly a painful day for all who knew him, I trust that this verdict will offer some measure of closure to the Rooney family.”
