Donald Trump’s five-day visit to Scotland is underway, and he is scheduled to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The former US President arrived in Scotland on Friday night and spent Saturday playing golf at his Trump Turnberry resort.
On Sunday, Trump will hold talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss trade relations between Europe and the US.
These discussions precede a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday, where trade is also expected to be a key topic.
The commencement of these talks signifies Trump’s focus on business matters during what is otherwise a private visit to Scotland.
On Saturday, Trump was observed playing golf at the renowned Turnberry course, which he acquired in 2014.
A substantial security operation was in place throughout the President’s golf outing.
Trump drove his own golf cart, while being surrounded by a large security entourage of similar vehicles.
Prior to his arrival on the course, police officers and military personnel conducted thorough searches of the area surrounding the Trump Turnberry resort, which has had a metal fence installed as part of the increased security measures.
While Trump golfed on Saturday, no protestors were present, but hundreds of people participated in demonstrations against his visit, organized by the Stop Trump Coalition in Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
After spending time at his South Ayrshire resort, Trump will travel to Aberdeenshire, where he is anticipated to inaugurate a second course at his Trump International golf resort in Balmedie.
During his stay in the north-east, Trump is also scheduled to meet with Scottish First Minister John Swinney.
Ahead of the meeting, Swinney stated that he has a responsibility to “raise global and humanitarian issues of significant importance, including the unimaginable suffering we are witnessing in Gaza” with President Trump.
Swinney added that he wants to “ensure Scotland’s voice is heard at the highest levels of government across the world.” He affirmed, “That is exactly what I will do when I meet with President Trump during his time in Scotland.”
