A trio of brothers from Gweedore have secured victory in Ireland’s premier currach race for the third time.

Simon, Ronan, and Michael O Dómhnaill have once again emerged victorious, following previous wins in 2021 and 2023.

Currach racing presents a distinctive challenge, as teams utilize traditional Irish boats. Various types of currachaí, including two, three, and four-person boats, compete against each other employing a handicap system to ensure fair competition.

The challenge boasts a unique course as well – crews navigate a 7-kilometer route, passing between Colt Island, St. Patrick’s Island, and Shenick Island, located just off the Skerries coast.

To win, the crew must land on Shenick Island, retrieve a numbered flag, and then race back to the finish line on the South Strand.

The O Dómhnaill brothers triumphed over a field of 19 boats to claim the top spot and secure the Denis Guiney Perpetual East Coast Currach Rowing Championship Cup.
