An Bord Pleanála has given the green light for the significant extension of the DART network to Kildare and Meath, a project that promises to revolutionize local transportation.
DART Network Extension to Transform Commuting in Kildare and Meath
The approved DART+ West project is set to enhance the current rail system, running from Connolly/Spencer Dock in north Dublin to Maynooth in Co Kildare, extending further to the M3 Parkway near Dunboyne in Co Meath. This ambitious initiative is expected to provide a more sustainable and efficient transport option for several communities, including Maynooth, Leixlip, and Castleknock.
Iarnród Éireann, the national railway operator, initially applied for the Railway Order in July 2022, with plans to commence construction in 2024 and to begin operations by 2029. The application featured proposals for a new station at Spencer Dock to interchange with the Luas Red Line, a new second entrance on Preston Street, and rail capacity enhancements at Connolly Station. Additionally, it included the construction of a new DART depot west of Maynooth station to maintain the new DART+ fleet.
Key Features and Benefits of the DART Network Extension
Iarnród Éireann has warmly welcomed the decision by An Bord Pleanála, describing the approval as a “crucial milestone” for the plan, which aims to double the capacity of the Greater Dublin Area rail network. The DART network extension is set to provide numerous benefits:
- Improved Transport Connectivity: Enhanced rail connectivity for communities in Kildare and Meath.
- Sustainable Travel: A more eco-friendly travel option reducing reliance on car transportation.
- Increased Capacity: Doubling the rail network capacity to accommodate more passengers.
Conditions and Next Steps
An Bord Pleanála granted the Railway Order with certain conditions, notably excluding the construction of the proposed depot west of Maynooth due to flood risk concerns. In response, Iarnród Éireann has committed to exploring alternative options for the depot construction to ensure it aligns with the timelines supporting the wider DART+ Programme.
Iarnród Éireann stated, “We will immediately consider the requirements to progress this, to deliver the depot in line with the timelines to support the wider DART+ Programme.”
Moving Forward with the DART Network Extension
With the approval in place, work to kick-start construction will commence promptly. Iarnród Éireann, in collaboration with the National Transport Authority, will now proceed with the procurement processes to engage contractors for the construction activities.
The DART network extension to Kildare and Meath is set to bring about a transformative change in the region’s transport infrastructure, offering residents a more efficient, reliable, and sustainable commuting option.
