A hospital fire in Hamburg, Germany, claimed the lives of three patients and left many injured, including two in critical condition, authorities reported on Sunday.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Marienkrankenhaus hospital shortly after midnight in response to the outbreak.

The fire originated in a room on the geriatric ward, situated on the building’s ground floor, subsequently spreading to the facade of the floor above. Smoke permeated all four floors of the hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

According to the German news agency dpa, the fire department confirmed the deaths of three adult patients, with over 50 individuals sustaining injuries.

Among the injured, two are in life-threatening condition, 16 have suffered serious injuries, and 36 sustained minor injuries.

A portion of the hospital was evacuated. Injured patients received treatment either at the hospital or at nearby medical facilities.

The fire was successfully extinguished within approximately 20 minutes.
