A “dark cloud” hangs over the Co Meath community after the tragic death of a teenage boy, locally named as Kofi Owusu, who got into difficulty in the water at Laytown.
Local representatives have expressed their condolences to the 15-year-old’s family from Dundalk, Co Louth, describing it as a “devastating loss”.
Emergency services initiated a search operation following a report of a male experiencing difficulty in the water at Laytown at 6:15 pm on Friday.
Gardaí confirmed that his body was recovered from the water by the coastguard.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Navan Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Expressions of sympathy have been extended to the boy’s family following the tragic incident.
Minister of State and Meath East TD Thomas Byrne conveyed his sorrow, stating that it was “devastating to hear of the tragic death of a teenage boy” in Laytown.
“My heart goes out to his family, friends, all those who were around Laytown tonight, and all who are grieving,” he shared on X.
“A summer moment has turned into an incalculable loss.”
Independent councillor Carol Lennon described it as “a devastating loss” for his family and friends.
“Thinking of those who were present, those who assisted with his recovery and those for whom this will trigger emotions of their own loss,” she posted on Facebook.
Councillor Sharon Tolan commented that “a dark cloud” hovered over the community on Friday night.
“My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the tragic accident in Laytown,” she said on Facebook.
“Please think long and hard before posting any commentary on any social media pages.”
