A student in Letterkenny has avoided a conviction but was ordered to donate to charity after being found with €245 worth of cocaine.
James Meredith was stopped and searched by Gardaí at Letterkenny Community Centre on January 18th last.
A quantity of cocaine was discovered during the search.
The 20-year-old appeared at Letterkenny District Court this week, charged with unlawful possession of a controlled drug (cocaine) on January 18th, 2025, at Letterkenny Garda Station, New Line Road, Letterkenny.
The charge is Contrary to Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 and Contrary to 27 (1) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 as substituted by Section 6 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1984.
The court heard that Meredith, of College Park, Letterkenny, has no prior convictions.
Mr. Frank Dorrian, solicitor for the defendant, stated that Meredith’s parents were present in court.
He explained that his client is an advertising and marketing student originally from Zimbabwe.
Judge Eiteain Cunningham acknowledged the significant quantity of cocaine involved.
Mr. Dorrian concurred, suggesting it reflected his client’s usage.
Judge Cunningham expressed willingness to give Meredith an opportunity but emphasized the seriousness of the amount and type of drug.
She directed a €500 donation to the Donegal Hospice.
The donation was paid into court. Judge Cunningham cautioned Meredith that he would not receive another opportunity if he faced a similar charge in the future.
