Russia maintains its openness to peace negotiations with Ukraine, but Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that achieving “our goals” remains the paramount objective. This statement comes shortly after former US President Donald Trump issued a deadline to Moscow, demanding a ceasefire or facing intensified sanctions.
Mr. Peskov, along with other Russian officials, has consistently denied accusations made by Kyiv and its Western allies that Russia is deliberately hindering the progress of peace talks.
Concurrently, Moscow continues to escalate its long-range attacks targeting Ukrainian cities. The number of drones launched in a single night has surpassed the totals for entire months in 2024, and analysts predict a potential further surge in these barrages.
In an interview with state TV reporter Pavel Zarubin, Mr. Peskov stated: “President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly expressed his desire for a peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian settlement as quickly as possible. This is a lengthy process, it demands considerable effort, and it is not simple.”
“The crucial element for us is the attainment of our objectives. Our objectives are clearly defined.”
The Kremlin has consistently asserted that any peace agreement must include Ukraine’s withdrawal from the four regions Russia illegally annexed in September 2022, despite never fully controlling them. Additionally, Russia demands that Ukraine abandon its aspirations to join NATO and agree to stringent limitations on its armed forces – demands that Kyiv and its Western allies have resolutely rejected.
On July 14th, Mr. Trump threatened Russia with substantial tariffs and announced a renewed flow of American weapons to Ukraine, indicating a more assertive stance towards Moscow following months of frustration over stalled negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.
Previous direct Russia-Ukraine negotiations held in Istanbul led to several rounds of prisoner exchanges but yielded limited further progress.
Mr. Trump stated his intention to impose “severe tariffs” unless a peace agreement is reached within 50 days. While providing few specifics regarding implementation, he suggested targeting Russia’s trading partners to isolate Moscow within the global economy.
Furthermore, Mr. Trump indicated that European allies would acquire “billions and billions” of dollars worth of US military equipment to be transferred to Ukraine, replenishing the country’s depleted weapons supplies. This plan includes the provision of Patriot air defense systems, which are considered a top priority for Ukraine in defending against Russian drones and missiles.
Concerns were recently raised about Mr. Trump’s commitment to supporting Ukraine when the Pentagon temporarily suspended shipments due to concerns about dwindling US stockpiles.
