Oisin Gillespie and his father, Aidan Gillespie, were instrumental in the Donegal team’s performance at the National League Preliminary Day in Tullamore last Sunday.

The Donegal team secured a silver medal and qualified for the finals on July 27th. Michael Logue from Rosses AC served as the County Team Manager.

This marks the first time the County Board has fielded a team in the County section of the National League. The team comprised athletes from athletic clubs including Letterkenny, Killybegs, Rosses, Cranford, Milford, and Lifford-Strabane.

Oisin was among the five athletes who secured maximum points for the team, achieving a 1.75m jump to become the top jumper of the day – excellent preparation for the All Ireland U17s next weekend. Aidan initially came to support Oisin; however, when an athlete had to withdraw, he bravely stepped up to compete in the Weight For Distance event. Despite it being an unfamiliar event, Aidan’s gym training proved beneficial as he exceeded expectations, securing 5th place and contributing valuable points to the team.

Adding to the club’s representation, Rosaleen and Cormac McGarvey, along with Lorraine Doherty, served as officials on the day. Well done to everyone.

At the New Mills 10k Letterkenny (10k County Championship), Charlie “Postie” O’Donnell was the first Rosses AC runner to finish, placing 8th overall and 2nd in the M40 category with a strong time of 34:48. Mark Ward followed in 36:48, Paul McKelvey in 37:32, Patrick Trimble in 37:41, Keith O’Connell achieved a PB of 38:51, Kenn Bates finished in 40:09, Norman McClean in 41:00, Declan Gallagher in 42:01, and Adrian Bonner in 47:02. Brendan McBride won the M60 category with an impressive time of 43:57. In the women’s race, Maria Ni Mhaolagain ran a strong race to finish second overall in 37:58. Helen McCready was the next Rosses lady to finish, also placing first in the F40 category with a solid time of 38:40, followed by Bernie Boyle who took 2nd in F40 in 39:08. Junior star Leah Ward completed her first 10k race in an excellent time of 42:47. Karen Devenney and Rosie Lynch also participated.
