Enterprise Causeway, supported by IFI’s Connecting Communities project, recently organized a vibrant day trip to Rathmullan for forty individuals from various community groups across the Causeway Coast and Glens region.
The participating groups included representatives from Cloughmills, Cullybackey, Bushmills, Portballintrae, Magilligan, Cushendall, and the Glen’s Men.
This cross-community and cross-border initiative offered participants the opportunity to explore the coastal charm of Rathmullan, witness the Inch Mile Swim event, and connect with local artists such as Moira McHugh of Perfectly Thrifted Interiors and coastal artist, Lisa McGill.
The group also visited the Rathmullan Makers’ Market, showcasing a diverse array of locally crafted art and crafts.
The itinerary included a visit to the Ray Community Centre for lunch, followed by captivating storytelling from Charlie Gallagher, a skilled blacksmith, stonemason, bladesmith, artist, and Sheanachi, complemented by musical performances by local singer/songwriter Maria McCormack.
For many attendees, this marked their first experience of Rathmullan and County Donegal, fostering a strong desire for future visits. This aligns perfectly with the Connecting Communities project’s commitment to supporting regions and communities facing challenges due to historical isolation, under-investment, and the repercussions of conflict and Brexit.
Day trips like the recent Rathmullan excursion serve as crucial initiatives to address barriers arising from the border and cultivate positive cross-border relations.
The overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants underscores the potential for ongoing Donegal day trips.
