Following the jailing of a former employee for abusing women at Lough Derg, the Prior of the pilgrimage site, Monsignor La Flynn, has issued an apology on behalf of the institution.
Tomas Gallagher, who previously worked in maintenance at the religious retreat, received a four-year prison sentence for assaulting five different women.
Monsignor Flynn conveyed his profound sorrow that these acts of abuse occurred against staff members, including a minor.
He extended an unreserved apology to the victims for the pain they have endured, assuring them of the retreat’s support during this difficult time.
He stated that in 2022, both he, as Prior, and the Operations Manager at Lough Derg at the time, were notified about allegations of sexual assault involving a staff member.
“In accordance with Safeguarding Policies and Procedures, the allegations were immediately reported to An Garda Siochána for investigation. The member of staff was suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. He since voluntarily resigned his employment.”
The Diocese of Clogher, to which Lough Derg belongs, and the Management of Lough Derg affirm their commitment to upholding the highest standards, practices, policies, and procedures for safeguarding and to fully cooperate with statutory authorities in all related cases, he added.
“If anyone else has a concern or complaint, either now or from the past, I encourage them to come forward and contact both the diocese and the statutory authorities via the provided numbers,” he concluded.
