Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) saw over 500 patients treated on trolleys last month.

According to recent figures released by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), 505 patients at LUH were treated on trolleys, chairs, or in “inappropriate spaces” during July.

This figure places LUH as the fifth highest in the country for trolley numbers, following Sligo University Hospital which recorded 706 patients.

Nationwide, a total of 9,271 patients experienced trolley treatment in Irish hospitals throughout July.

INMO General Secretary, Phil Ní Sheaghdha, emphasized the need for proactive action in preparation for the anticipated busy Autumn period.

“These figures speak volumes. High trolley numbers during the summer months send a discouraging message to both our dedicated healthcare staff and the public,” she stated.

“Nurses and midwives are concerned heading into the autumn and winter seasons, knowing they will face increased pressure from flu and other viral infections, including COVID-19.”

Ms. Ní Sheaghdha further highlighted that their members are already providing care under significant pressure due to hospital overcrowding, negatively impacting both staff well-being and patient care.

“The INMO has consistently urged the HSE to invest in community services across the country to better prepare for seasonal increases in infections and subsequent hospital overcrowding.”
