A well-known shop in east Donegal, which served the community for nearly 70 years, is slated for conversion into residential housing.

William Doherty and Sons, a prominent business on Convoy’s Main Street, had been a local landmark since its establishment in 1959.

Ownership of the business transitioned from the Doherty family in the past year.

Shauni Holian is now seeking approval from Donegal County Council to repurpose the property, with plans to transform it into two semi-detached houses.

In 1959, William Doherty acquired the original corrugated iron shop (below) and the adjacent residence from David McCrabbe, a resident of Raphoe.

The location later became the central hub for Doherty’s wholesale business, eventually expanding to include a printing and book shop.

Doherty’s shop as it appeared in 1959, following its purchase from David McCrabbe by William Doherty.
