The North West 10K committee is celebrating a major achievement: surpassing the €1 million mark after the 28th annual road race in Letterkenny.

Since its inception in 1997, this significant event has now raised a remarkable €1,018,876.

These vital funds have directly benefited 41 local charities across Donegal.

This year, Donegal Horizons and the Multiple Sclerosis Ireland Donegal Branch were the beneficiaries, each receiving a cheque for €17,476. This follows an incredible €34,952 raised through this year’s 10K event.

Neil Martin, Chairperson of the North West 10K, praised the charities for their dedicated work this year and also gave recognition to every volunteer committee member who has contributed since 1997.

Letterkenny Mayor Cllr Ciaran Brogan offered his congratulations, stating: “It’s a fantastic example of community spirit leading to so much good. Congratulations and well done to everyone involved. Reaching the million mark is a significant accomplishment for all of you.”

From coffee mornings and pub quizzes to the dazzling “Stars in Their Eyes” show, the two charities went above and beyond to raise funds and generate awareness.

Anne Ramsey of Donegal Horizons CLG stated that the €17,479 donation will significantly enhance their services in Carndonagh and Letterkenny. Donegal Horizons, which supports adults with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities or autism, recently opened its new Letterkenny facility in the Grand Central building this month, and the funds will contribute to essential set-up costs.

Sam Kennedy from the MS Ireland Donegal branch expressed their gratitude, emphasizing that every euro makes a difference. The charity plans to use the funds to provide crucial supports for its 300+ members, including physiotherapy, welfare services, and social outings throughout Donegal.

The North West 10K committee, comprised of 12 dedicated members, organizes the race and provides support to charities during their three-month fundraising efforts leading up to the event. Former committee members, including past chairpersons Grace and James Boyle, joined them for the celebration. Charlie Kelly was also acknowledged for his contributions from the very first event at Rockhill, despite his absence.

The North West 10k is proudly sponsored by Donegal Daily, Brian McCormick InterSport, Century Cinemas, the Mount Errigal Hotel, and the Value Centre.
