Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Naughton has been elected Chairperson of the Donegal Municipal District for the term 2025-2026.

This marks Councillor Naughton’s second term as Cathaoirleach.

He succeeds Sinn Fein Councillor Noel Jordan in the role.

Upon accepting the position, Councillor Naughton expressed that he was “deeply honoured and privileged.”

In a social media post, he stated, “I would like to thank all the people that got me to this day, especially my Mum, Dad, sister Sheila and brother Peter, who have gone to their eternal rest but looking down with pride today.”

Councillor Naughton described the occasion as a “special day” for himself, his wife Annette, and their children, Erin and Cian.

He added, “I look forward to working for all the people in this MD from Bundoran to Glencolmcille, and be assured of my support and commitment to this area as always.”

Independent Councillor Jimmy Brogan was elected as Leas-Cathaoirleach of the municipal district at today’s AGM, taking over from Councillor Michéal Naughton, who previously held the position.
