Gardaí are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred yesterday evening in Co. Carlow, leaving one man dead and a child injured.

The details surrounding the incident are still emerging, but preliminary reports indicate that a man discharged several shots inside the Tesco supermarket located in the Fairgreen Shopping Centre at approximately 6:15 PM.

The man sustained fatal injuries during the event, with gunshot wounds appearing to be self-inflicted.

Gardaí have confirmed the deceased is an Irish male of white ethnicity.

A young girl suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident. Paramedics treated her at the scene, and she has since returned home with her family.

The exact cause of the girl’s injuries remains under investigation by Gardaí.

Following the shooting, the shopping centre was immediately evacuated, and a Garda cordon was established around the scene. This cordon remained in effect overnight.

Gardaí are conducting a comprehensive security sweep of the surrounding area.

As a precautionary measure, the Army Bomb Disposal Team was requested to attend due to concerns that the man might have been carrying an explosive device.

The deceased man’s body remains at the location and will not be moved until the area is declared safe by authorities.
