Fianna Fáil councillor Martin McDermott has been elected as the new Cathaoirleach (Mayor) of the Inishowen Municipal District for the upcoming year.

Cllr Fionán Bradley, also from Fianna Fáil, was elected as Leas-Cathaoirleach (Deputy Mayor) at today’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Cllr McDermott previously served as Inishowen Cathaoirleach in 2019.

Following the meeting, Cllr McDermott expressed that he was “absolutely delighted” to be re-elected as Cathaoirleach of the Inishowen Municipal District.

“It is a great honour to hold this position again, and I want to sincerely thank my colleagues for their confidence in electing me,” he stated.

“A very special thank you goes to my family—especially my wife Sheila and our daughters Alishia and Sophie—for their unwavering support and encouragement.

“I am committed to serving all the people of Inishowen diligently over the coming year, and I will work hard on your behalf.”

Separately, Inishowen councillor Paul Canning was elected as Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council yesterday, with Letterkenny councillor Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly as his Leas Cathaoirleach.

As of today, the new Cathaoirleachs have been appointed for all Municipal Districts (MDs) for the term 2025/26. They are:

Donegal MD – Cllr Michael Naughton (FF)
Glenties MD – Cllr Michael McClafferty (IND)
Inishowen MD – Cllr Martin McDermott (FF)
Letterkenny MD – Cllr Ciaran Brogan (FF)
Lifford-Stranorlar MD – Cllr Martin Harley (FG)
