Malin Head has broken its all-time temperature record, a milestone in the weather station’s 140-year history.
Yesterday, the temperature soared to 27.6 degrees Celsius at Malin Head, marking the first temperature record broken at the station in almost seven decades.
The previous record of 27.1 degrees Celsius was established on August 24th, 1955, shortly after the construction of the weather station buildings that are still in use today.
While a formal weather station was later established, Malin Head boasts weather data dating back to 1885.
Initially, employees of Lloyd’s Insurance Company of London staffed and operated a local coastal signal station, compiling and dispatching weather reports.
Yesterday also saw the highest temperatures of the year across numerous regions of the country, with Mount Dillon in Roscommon experiencing the peak at a scorching 31.1 degrees Celsius.
