The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has released a critical report on the Nazareth House Nursing Home in Sligo Town, highlighting significant issues in multiple areas. The Sligo nursing home report found eight non-compliances during an inspection conducted in February, raising concerns about the quality of care provided to residents.
Nazareth House Nursing Home, which accommodates 70 residents requiring various levels of care, was found lacking in essential areas such as infection control, resident rights, protection, and fire safety. The HIQA report indicated that staffing levels were insufficient, with an inadequate skill mix to meet the residents’ needs effectively. Additionally, the management systems in place did not ensure the safety and appropriateness of the services provided.
One major concern highlighted in the Sligo nursing home report was the poor state of the facility’s infrastructure. Worn and damaged carpets impeded effective cleaning, and there was a notable lack of proper storage for clinical equipment. The environment posed a risk for transmitting healthcare-associated infections, with issues such as dirty and stained carpets and a lack of handwashing facilities in the cleaner’s room.
Fire safety measures were also found wanting, with the report stating that the day-to-day arrangements for reviewing fire safety risks were ineffective. Furthermore, the inspection revealed that residents were not adequately protected from abuse, and those involved in recent safeguarding incidents did not have appropriate care plans.
Despite these issues, the Sligo nursing home report noted that the provider has since implemented several measures to address the non-compliances. Actions taken include the introduction of a weekly documented equipment cleaning checklist and clarification of staff responsibilities for cleaning clinical equipment. All residents have now been reassessed, and documentation has been updated to enhance safeguarding protocols.
The full HIQA report provides detailed insights into the areas of concern and the corrective actions undertaken by Nazareth House Nursing Home. As the facility works towards compliance, ongoing monitoring and improvements will be essential to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
