Emile Daly, a Letterkenny native and barrister, has been nominated to the District Court under the new judicial appointments system.

Ms. Daly, a barrister (BL), is among six nominees for District Court positions.

She brings over 25 years of legal experience as a practicing barrister to the role.

Her qualifications include a BCL degree from University College Dublin (UCD) and a BL degree from the Kings Inns.

Formerly the vice chair of the Employment Appeals Tribunal, Ms. Daly currently serves as an Adjudicator at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC).

Alongside Ms. Daly, solicitors Valerie Corcoran, Liz Healy, and Catherine Ryan, and barristers Karen Dowling BL and Áine Shannon BL have also been nominated to fill District Court vacancies.

Following the establishment of the Judicial Appointments Commission in January, only candidates recommended by the Commission can be submitted by the Government for presidential appointment.

This Act marks the most significant reform in three decades regarding judicial selection, with the Commission, led by the Chief Justice, comprising both judges and lay members.

Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan stated: “The system for judicial appointment in Ireland is a crucial mechanism to uphold the independence of the judiciary, which is a central element of Ireland’s constitutional framework.

“The new Act and the work of the Judicial Appointments Commission ensures a rigorous, transparent, and merit-based application process for nomination as a judge.”
