A Letterkenny software engineer has been appointed as a Peace Commissioner for County Donegal.
Ajit Kumar Dharmarajan received the appointment from Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan this week.
In this honorary role, Mr. Dharmarajan will be authorized to perform various legal functions, such as witnessing signatures on documents like statutory declarations and other official forms.
Mr. Dharmarajan has been a resident and professional in Donegal for a significant period, initially joining Pramerica. Currently, he is a Senior Consultant at Optum Ireland, where he collaborates with his wife, Suma Ramachandran.
Ajit and his wife Suma Ramachandran, who also works at Optum, are deeply involved in the community. Their elder son, Adithya Ajit, graduated from Dublin City University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and their younger son, Surya Ajit, is a student at St. Eunan’s College in Letterkenny, preparing for his Leaving Certificate.
Beyond his professional life, Mr. Dharmarajan has actively contributed to Donegal through various roles, including co-founding the Indian Community Centre Letterkenny (ICCL) as Joint Secretary and establishing the Donegal Indian Malayalee Association (DIMA), where he now serves as an advisory committee member.
He also served on the Ministerial Council on Integration for the Connacht/Ulster region – a government advisory body on immigration and integration. He provided input to the Minister and advocated for immigrant communities.
Through DIMA, Mr. Dharmarajan has partnered with EU-funded projects like Port na Fáilte to foster cultural diversity. He has been instrumental in organizing Indian festivals like Onam and Diwali at the Regional Cultural Centre and An Grianán Theatre and has actively participated in charitable events.
As a Peace Commissioner, Mr. Dharmarajan will be available to provide attestation services and other related assistance to the public.
