The jury in Harvey Weinstein’s Manhattan sex crimes retrial resumed deliberations on Friday, following a day of discussions without reaching a verdict. The case is a key moment for the #MeToo movement.
Having received the case on Thursday morning, the panel requested a readback of testimony from two of Weinstein’s accusers, and to review medical records pertaining to one of these women.
The jury, composed of seven women and five men, is considering two counts of criminal sex act and one count of rape against the 73-year-old Oscar-winning movie producer. The criminal sex act charges are the more serious felonies.
Weinstein has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The initial sexual misconduct allegations against Weinstein in 2017 were a catalyst for the #MeToo movement.
He was previously convicted of sex crimes in both New York and California. However, the New York conviction was overturned last year, leading to this retrial before a new jury and a different judge.
The jurors have heard over five weeks of evidence, including extensive testimony from three women accusing Weinstein.
