Iranian state media reports that Iran has established a new defence council following attacks in June by Israel and the US.
The Supreme National Security Council, Iran’s highest security body, made the decision to create the Supreme National Defence Council. According to reports, President Masoud Pezeshkian will head the council.
The council will be responsible for developing defensive plans and enhancing the capabilities of Iran’s armed forces.
The speaker of Parliament, the head of the judiciary, the chiefs of military branches, and heads of related ministries will be among the members, according to reports.
The defence, intelligence, and foreign ministries are expected to be included as council members, though the report did not specify these details.
This decision comes after a 12-day air war by Israel and the US, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,100 people, including military chiefs and commanders.
A ceasefire has been in effect since shortly after the airstrikes targeted Iran’s major nuclear facilities.
Iran had a similar council during the 1980s Iran-Iraq war, which resulted in nearly one million casualties on both sides.
