Tragedy struck in Co Tipperary as a 12-year-old girl died after encountering difficulties while swimming.
Emergency services responded to a call at approximately 4:20 pm on Friday at the River Suir in Newcastle, near The Vee Pass and Ballymacarbry.
The incident occurred at a popular swimming location along the Suir Blueway. She was swimming with a group when the tragedy unfolded.
Emergency services and Gardaí quickly arrived at the scene. The girl was rescued from the water around 4:45 pm and transported to Cork University Hospital (CUH) via the Irish Coast Guard Rescue 117 helicopter.
Gardaí released a statement on Friday evening confirming the girl’s passing.
Sources say the girl resided in Newcastle and her family is well-regarded in the community. She had recently finished sixth class.
A file is being compiled for the Coroner’s Court.
