The Clonmany Genealogy and Heritage Group will host a special event later this month, celebrating the deep connection between the people of Inishowen and their natural surroundings.
Titled “Celebrating Inishowen’s Natural Heritage,” the event will feature a captivating exhibition showcasing local photographs, historical artefacts, and natural items. These will illustrate how local communities have historically relied on the region’s rich flora and fauna for survival, enjoyment, and well-being.
The exhibition will be open from midday to 4pm on Saturday, August 23rd, and from 1pm to 4:30pm on Sunday, August 24th. Admission is free.
The event will also delve into traditional practices like farming, fishing, turf cutting, thatching, and the gathering of medicinal plants. Visitors will discover how local communities utilized the land and sea not only for sustenance and shelter, but also for trade, warmth, and healing purposes.
A key area of exploration will be the crucial role of animals and plants in Inishowen folklore.
According to the Clonmany Genealogy and Heritage Group, one notable example is the significance of the robin.
“Many believed that the appearance of a robin shortly after a bereavement was a comforting sign from the deceased, assuring loved ones of their peace and happiness. However, the encounter with other animals could be interpreted as a warning. Many fishermen would refrain from going to sea if they saw a fox on their way to the pier. Interestingly, a similar apprehension was felt upon encountering a red-haired woman on the road!”
The event also includes a guided “Walk & Talk” in Straid at 12:00 noon. Meeting at the Urris GAA car park at 11:45 am, the walk will incorporate a visit to the Old Church. Topics will include the history of Straid and the Old Church, local ‘Big Houses’, Glenfield Army Camp, the nearby Souterrain, Straid’s connections to the British Royal Family, local wildlife folklore, and more.
Following the Straid walk, there will be an additional “Walk and Talk” in Clonmany Village, conducted by Clonmany Walking Tours (€7).

Hugh Farren, PRO of the Clonmany Genealogy & Heritage Group, encourages everyone to visit the Market House and enjoy the event.
“The exhibition will feature captivating scenic and wildlife photographs from the local area and across Inishowen,” he stated.
“Visitors will also have the opportunity to view a collection of antique objects and tools, learning about their uses in daily life. This is a chance to reflect on the vital importance of nature and natural resources in the past, and the urgent need to protect them for generations to come.”
