DWL Senior Match Reports 23/06/2025
Keadue Rovers 0-0 Fanad United
Keadue hosted Fanad Utd on Monday night at Central Park in the first round of the Donegal Women’s League in damp, breezy conditions. It was the visitors who were the quicker team to settle, moving the ball about well and creating some openings. The first effort was by Clodagh Heron, whose shot was saved by Leanna Gallagher in the home goal. Fanad kept the pressure on, especially down the right wing and forced a number of set pieces, which Keadue initially struggled to deal with and Fanad’s Shannon McBride was the pin point for most of their attacks and she hit the post on fifteen minutes, before the home team cleared their lines. After the initial nervous opening, Keadue got to grips with play and after twenty minutes, from a neat passing move, Keadue’s Katie O’Donnell almost opened the scoring, only for her chipped effort to be well saved by Mary B McGeever in the Fanad goals. A few more Keadue corners followed as they improved more towards half time but Fanad were always dangerous on the break with Clodagh Heron and Teresa Coll also creating openings for them but no further chances fell to either team before half time. At the start of the second half, Keadue upped the tempo and Caroline Sharkey was almost through, following anexcellent Katie O’Donnell pass but McGeever was again alert in the Fanad nets. Keadue’s Sarah Doherty put in a huge shift in midfield winning plenty of 50/50 duels and this gave Keadue a platform and just before the hour, a Caroline Sharkey pass found Katie O’Donnell but her effort was blocked by the Fanad defence. A few substitutions were made by Fanad midway through the second half and they had a few more efforts on goal from Marie Kerr and Aishling Duffy but these were well saved by Keadue sub keeper Ellie McGarvey. The final ten minutes were stretched as both sides went in search of the elusive winner but neither side could break the deadlock. Despite the 0-0 scoreline, this was an enjoyable encounter with both sides giving their all in an intense encounter where both showed tremendous work rate and skill. Both teams look to have a strong season ahead of them. Thanks to referee Paddy McCauley.
Bonagee United vs Deele Harps (Bonagee Win)
Bonagee started off the stronger side and continued this form throughout the game. Natalie McFadden scored in the opening minutes for the home side. Was not long after the first goal the home side grabbed their second of the game when Orla McBride scored from close range. Louise Coyle kept at 2 for a while with some great one on one saves but found it
difficult when Bonagee kept pressing throughout the game and constantly kept the pressure on. Deele players Jade, Nadine and Laura where working very hard throughout the game never giving up. Bonagee had a number of the u16s grabbing their senior debut and getting on the score sheet.

Ellie Peoples missed a good chance after a great through ball from Zara Walsh on the stroke of half time. Jasmine Melly was going well for the town and had a couple of chances early in the second half but McLaughlin did well to stop them.It was nip and tuck and again Peoples was unfortunate to see her chance go wide to seal three points for Mulroy again Zara Walsh did well and played her though on goal but again the keeper stood tall and pulled off a brilliant save.Sophia McElwaine then went close and Delaney Walsh at the other end for Donegal had a chance with time ticking away and in the end a draw for a fair result. St Catherines 3-2 Gweedore United
A tough physical game by two well matched teams this evening St Catherines vs Gweedore, some fantastic performances by players on both teams played in a great sporting spirit. Referee John McGlaney kept the game flowing and hadn’t really much to do with the game played in perfect conditions.
Mulroy Academy 3-1 Illistrin
Aishling Duffy was the star of the show as her stunning strikes in both halves secured a memorable 3-1 victory for Mulroy Academy U16 girls in their first ever home game at Whitestrand. After a month-long break for the Junior Cert exams, the Mulroy girls returned to action with energy and purpose on a pitch in pristine condition for the occasion. Their opponents, Illistrin, arrived with a reputation for tight contests – and the match lived up to that billing. Illistrin started on the front foot and broke Mulroy’s season-long clean sheet record within just seven minutes. A series of early attacks forced a corner, which Siobhán Toner clinically converted to give the visitors the lead. Mulroy responded immediately, showing composure and resilience. Just three minutes later, Erin Carlin sent in a well-placed cross from the right, and Aishling Duffy met it with a superb strike that flew high into the roof of the net. The remainder of the first half was fiercely contested, with both sides battling for control in midfield. Then, on the half-hour mark, Carlin again made the difference. Her dangerous run down the left flank led to a looping cross that caught the Illistrin goalkeeper off guard, bouncing awkwardly and crossing the line to give Mulroy a 2-1 lead heading into the break. The second half saw both teams create chances, but defences stood strong. Mulroy’s depth proved crucial, with nine substitutions helping them maintain their intensity. Illistrin, hampered by the absence of key players, could only rotate players with limited subs. With the game finely balanced, it was Duffy again who produced the moment of magic to seal the win. Picking up the ball from distance, she unleashed a thunderous strike that gave the keeper no chance – her second spectacular goal of the night. Both goalkeepers stood out with several key saves to keep the scoreline down, but Mulroy’s dominance and Duffy’s brilliance made the difference.
Division 1
Donegal Town 1-0 Keadue Rovers
In a really tight match, there was nothing between the teams in this match and it was 0-0 at half time. In the 2nd half Keadue came out strong but couldn’t get past the Donegalgoalkeeper Eve McMullin, the match looked like it was heading for a draw but with 10 minutes to go Donegal Town broke and the ball fell to Evie Sweeney who scored a great goal. Keadue pushed for an equaliser but the Donegal Town defence kept solid and the game finished 1-0 to the home side.
Division 2
Convoy Arsenal 1-0 Lagan Harps
Our U16 girls were back in action tonight after a few weeks off where they welcomed Lagan Harps to Orchard Park. From the off, both teams were battling hard and the game was evenly contested with both sets of players looking to get the first goal. Chances were had at both ends however it was Convoy who took the lead at 26 minutes in when Grace Mc Gowan received the ball and made a solo run from the defence line right the way up the pitch to place a cracking shot over the keeper’s head. For the rest of the game Lagan was pushing hard to get the equaliser but the Convoy Girls stood solid in the back line, letting nothing past. Not content with the one the home team pushed on trying to gain another goal however Lagan denied the efforts. Some great passing and play from both teams tonight and a good win for the Convoy Girls against a team who always makes us work very hard. Final score 1-0 to Convoy. Well done to all.
Raphoe Town 2-6 Ballyraine
A strong first half from Ballyraine proved to be the difference on Wednesday night as they raced into a 4-0 lead by the break that Raphoe were just unable to peg back. It was an evenly contested opening period with Raphoe having the first real chance of the game in the opening minute, but when Ballyraine’s Eimear Cassidy pounced on a Raphoe mistake in the 10th minute to take the lead, she quickly added a second with a long ball through the Raphoe defence and the home team struggled to get themselves back on track. Raphoe played well for long periods, even if Ballyraine, with the cushion of the early lead, seemed comfortable and when the home side failed to make any of their attacks count, they were made to pay when Ballyraine added two more goals just before the break. The home team re-shuffled the pack at the interval, but even that looked to be to no avail as Ballyraine chipped in two quick goals at the start of the second half. Soon after that Raphoe
seemed to find their rhythm. The Ballyraine goalkeeper saved from the penalty spot and again denied Raphoe in a one on one, before Cara O Connell finally found the net with a stunning long-range goal to the roof of the net. It was a cracking contest at this stage, Ballyraine pressing forward and forcing a couple of great saves from Elizabeth Clarke, before Raphoe added another with a fabulous goal from Saoirse Deasley. There wasn’t time to stage a comeback, but Raphoe showed real spirit to never give up in the second half while Ballyraine continued to play excellent football as they secured the victory in a great game that was a credit to both teams.

Keadue Rovers 2-1 Glenea United
Glenea were the visitors to Keadue on a blustery Friday evening and made the home side battle all the way for the victory. In testing conditions Keadue took an early lead when Ella Bonner smashed a tremendous shot from 30 yards into the top corner. Keadue continued to press but Glenea were dogged in their defending and despite numerous half chances for the
home side, a Glenea player was always there to get a block in. On 29 mins Glenea got a lifeline when a long ball out of defence caused a mix up in the Keadue back line and Aimee McGinley stayed calm to finish into an empty net. Their joy was short lived however and just a minute later Keadue took the lead again when Emily Doogan scored a rasping free kick from 30 yards. The 2nd half continued with Keadue dominating the play and despite having a significant amount of half chances the excellent display from the Glenea defence kept the scoreline tight. Best for Keadue were Lena O Donnell, Shaylyn Boyle, Gracie O Donnell and Ayva Boyle. Lucy Doohan, Aine Mangan and Molly Friel were best for Glenea Referee Sean O Donnell kept the game flowing well.

However, the lead didn’t last long as Orla Maguire equalised for Donegal Town on 18 minutes. Rovers dominated the remainder of the first half, finishing with an explosive burst of goals. With just three minutes to the break, Savanna Keys struck twice — first finishing a well-placed cross from Aoibhlinn McLaughlin, then converting after a lofted ball over the top from McGinley. Right on the stroke of half-time, McGinley added her second with a beautifully taken free kick to make it 4-1. Donegal Town came out in the second half determined to turn things around. Keri Wade in the Rovers goal made three crucial saves to maintain the lead as the pressure mounted. The visitors’ persistence paid off when Isla McShane found the net on 50 minutes, before Orla Maguire grabbed her second goal of the game on 66 minutes to narrow the deficit to just one. Kilmacrennan Celtic 1-2 Gweedore United
A cracking game of football at Lurgy Park saw the visitors emerge victorious after another closely fought game. There was nothing to separate either team in the opening 20 minutes with both teams trying hard to play good football but failing to trouble either goalkeeper. Gweedore took the lead on 23 minutes, Neasa Diver dribbling past 2 defenders before crossing low in to box for striker Boyd to poke home. Two minutes later the game was level, a good move down the kilmac left saw Eimear Quinn lay the ball off to Aoibhinn Hegarty who took a touch before firing home in to the top corner from 25 yards for a stunning goal and a deserved equaliser. Half time saw the game level at 1 – 1. The 2nd half continued along similar lines with both defences on top, the young Kilmacrenan team working hard to close down the much stronger Gweedore team all over the pitch. The home team almost got in front on the hour, Caidhla Conlon burst through but a fantastic save
from Sheena Ferry kept the scores level. With just 4 minutes left to play the visitors took the lead, a quick throw in found Chloe McFadden in space who sidestepped a challenge before shooting low to the net for the winning goal in a very even contest. The home team were best served by Aynee mc Mullan, Jorjamae mc Groarty, Roise mc Bride and Aoibhinn while the visitors has strong performances from Ciara mc Fadden, Neasa Diver, Chloe mc Fadden and goalkeeper Sheena. As always referee Liam McLaughlin had an excellent game, keeping the match flowing.
Glenree 4-2 Ballyraine Celtic
Glenree produced a strong second half performance to overcome a determined Ballyraine Celtic team. Playing against a strong breeze, Glenree opened the scoring when Tara ran from midfield and finished low into the corner. Ballyraine were back level on 18 minutes with Eadaoin finding the back of the net after a scramble in the box. Glenree had a number of chances to take the lead but found Saoirse in the Ballyraine goals in top form. With half time approaching a long ball split the Glenree defence and Eadaoin produced an excellent finish giving Hannah no chance. Glenree got on top early in the second half with Cora, Leah B and Eilis all going close. The equaliser finally came on 56 minutes when Aoife played a ball into Emily who made no mistake from 6 yards out. Ballyraine were always dangerous on the break with Hanna causing problems but the Glenree defence held strong with some great performances especially from Leah Connor Faughnan, Erin and Mollie. Emily scored her second goal of the evening with a fine solo run. Tara finished off the scoring late on with another good strike from just inside the box. Sarah and Leah H playing their first games at this level were outstanding all evening. Claire had to come off early with a knee injury and we wish her a speedy recovery. Glenree had great performances all throughout the pitch with Leah Connor Faughnan, Erin and Emily especially impressive. The stand out players for Ballyraine Celtic tonight were goalkeeper Saoirse and Jessica. Thanks to referee Mick Lagan who kept the game flowing.

Swilly Rovers 0-1 Dunfanaghy Youths
Swilly Rovers FC u14 girls took on a bright and energetic Dunfanaghy on Friday evening. Not too much to distinguish the two teams with both creating chances throughout. Dunfanaghy started brightest however and after a few attempts at through balls it was a longer range effort from Clara Ward-Duffy that finally broke the deadlock. Second half ebbed and flowed and some saves from both keepers kept it 0- 1 which was how it finished up. Thanks to Dunfanaghy for making the journey and to Dessie mcLaughlin for officiating a well behaved match.
