Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty is urging the government to take immediate action to address the shortage of childcare places in Donegal.
The Sinn Fein TD highlighted the crippling cost of childcare for many parents, exacerbated by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
He stated that the cost is often comparable to taking out another mortgage.
He said, “Securing a spot for a child in a creche or with a childminder is becoming increasingly difficult for parents. My office has been overwhelmed with calls from desperate parents seeking childcare in Donegal.”
“When this issue is raised with the government, they rely on outdated data to downplay the problem.”
“Parents are reporting extensive waiting lists, with 30 or 40 children ahead of them at childcare facilities in Donegal.”
“The situation has spiralled out of control, necessitating urgent intervention to prevent parents from making drastic decisions, such as leaving their jobs to care for their children.”
The West Donegal TD emphasized the need for the government to take this issue seriously.
“Numerous promises were made during the election to urgently address this issue, but none have been fulfilled.”
“One such promise was to reduce childcare costs to €200 per month.”
“In response to my inquiries, the government admitted they still lack a timeline for implementing this reduction.”
“The government has also consistently failed to provide details regarding their commitment in the Programme for Government to conduct a broad consultation and develop a detailed action plan for affordable and accessible childcare.”
“The Tanaiste pledged an action plan within 100 days of the government’s formation, but even the consultation has not commenced.”
“These were merely empty promises, and this inaction is unacceptable.”
