Dublin City University (DCU) has announced the appointment of Cathal Marley, originally from Donegal, as its new Chancellor.

Mr. Marley, a DCU graduate hailing from Cloghan, assumed the role of Chief Executive of EirGrid Group in April 2025. In this position, he is leading the transformation of Ireland’s national electricity network to achieve the country’s Climate Change targets related to renewable energy.

With over 25 years of experience in the utilities and infrastructure sectors, Mr. Marley has held senior leadership roles across electricity, water, and gas. These include Chief Executive of Ervia (2019-2025) and Chairperson of Irish Water (2019-2023).

He is a strong advocate for renewable energy and sustainability, dedicated to creating a cleaner energy future. He also demonstrates a keen interest in promoting education and sport through his voluntary work.

Mr. Marley previously served as Deputy Chairperson of the DCU Governing Authority and Chairperson of its Audit Committee from July 2021 to July 2025. He has been a member of the DCU Audit Committee since December 2016. He currently holds the position of Chairperson of Swim Ireland.

DCU President Professor Dáire Keogh commented, “Cathal will bring invaluable insight, energy, and experience to the leadership of DCU. As an alumnus, he understands the unique character, the contributions, and the responsibilities of DCU to Irish society.”

“He has a distinguished record of leadership, governance, and service. His commitment to sustainable and renewable energy is exemplary, particularly at this pivotal time for the country.”

“I am delighted to welcome Cathal as Chancellor as we drive our mission to transform lives and societies.”

“I would also like to express my gratitude to Cathal’s predecessor, Brid Horan, for her outstanding commitment as Chancellor over the past four years.”

The Chancellor is responsible for leading DCU’s Governing Authority, ensuring good governance, integrity, and accountability across the University. This involves overseeing the university’s strategic direction and ensuring its successful implementation.

The role also encompasses ceremonial and ambassadorial duties, including the conferring of degrees at graduation ceremonies.

DCU Chancellor Cathal Marley stated, “Even as Ireland’s higher education sector faces challenges, it continues to significantly contribute to the country’s success, both socially and economically, domestically and internationally.”

“Over the past four years as a member of the Governing Authority, I have witnessed firsthand the impact of DCU’s teaching and research on our stakeholders and on issues of global importance.”

“I would like to thank the President and Governing Authority of DCU for the honour of being appointed Chancellor. I look forward to working with the DCU community as we strive to be a leading innovative European University.”

The Chancellor’s appointment occurred during the first meeting of DCU’s new Governing Authority. The complete list of members can be viewed here.

Chancellor Cathal Marley succeeds Brid Horan, who served two terms on the Authority and as Chancellor since 2021.
