Deputy Charles Ward has called on Housing Minister James Browne to officially declare the current housing and homelessness situation a “national emergency.”
The 100% Redress Party TD highlighted the alarming 80% increase in homelessness across Ireland over the past three years. Census 2022 data reveals that children aged 0-4 constitute the largest single age group within the homeless population, representing 11.4% of the total.
As of April, Donegal County had 54 recorded homeless individuals.
Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Ward stated: “This crisis has persisted for over a decade, marked by housing shortages, escalating rents, deteriorating housing stock, and a surge in homelessness.”
He further added: “In Donegal, these figures are likely to continue their upward trajectory as numerous families impacted by the defective concrete crisis face the real threat of homelessness. These statistics clearly demonstrate governmental failure.”
