Milford is set to become safer for pedestrians with a €125,000 allocation to build a new footpath connecting the Mulroy Woods Hotel and Lidl.
The need for a dedicated walkway has grown as pedestrian traffic has increased on the roadside between the hotel and the retail park.
The funding originates from the Community Recognition Fund, designed to support communities that have welcomed significant numbers of people displaced by conflict, including those from Ukraine. Donegal has received a total of €1,305,917 for 17 community projects.
Cllr. Declan Meehan, a strong advocate for the project, hailed the announcement as “a vital investment in community safety and wellbeing.”
“This has been a long time coming, and I’m delighted this funding has been secured. The route connecting Mulroy Woods and Lidl is notoriously dangerous for walkers, an issue I and many residents have repeatedly raised. This funding will now allow Donegal County Council to proceed with construction, making the route safe for all,” said Cllr. Meehan.
He continued, “This is more than just infrastructure. It’s about enhancing inclusivity and accessibility within our town. Parents with prams, older residents enjoying a stroll, and young people travelling to work or school all deserve a safe route. This project benefits everyone in Milford.”
Cllr. Meehan also acknowledged the community’s advocacy, emphasizing the importance of local involvement in highlighting the issue.
“The people of Milford voiced their concerns, and their persistence helped drive this project forward. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who raised this issue with me and directly with the Council. Your voices were heard.”
The project is currently undergoing public consultation. More details can be found at: https://consult.donegal.ie/en/consultation/part-8-mulroy-woods-lidl-footpath?src=mawebsite
