A cross-border initiative connecting Pettigo with a community in County Fermanagh has commenced.

The Donegal Municipal District PEACEPLUS Project, titled “Good Neighbours,” was inaugurated at the Termon Complex in Pettigo earlier this week.

The project’s objective is to implement a program that fosters comprehensive community engagement and enhances capacity-building between Pettigo and its neighboring counterpart, Tullyhommon in County Fermanagh.

This project is among 32 receiving funding as part of the PEACEPLUS community building schemes within Donegal.

Donegal’s PEACEPLUS Local Action Plan allocates over €7.6 million in EU funding to this project and other similar “peacebuilding” endeavors.

Speaking at the Pettigo project launch, Donegal County Council Cathaoirleach Niamh Kennedy stated:

“The Good Neighbours Peace Programme serves as a potent symbol of the possibilities that arise when communities unite across communities and borders. Today, we are not only launching a program; we are creating a pathway for community-led regeneration, promoting peaceful and inclusive neighborhoods, and celebrating all cultural identities. This initiative centers around collaboration, understanding, and building a foundation for connection and shared purpose.”

“Over the next two years, this inspiring program, delivered by ADoPT (Association for the Development of Pettigo & Tullyhommon), will emphasize grassroots engagement.”

“Chairman Daniel McCrory remarked, “We are excited to collaborate with our diverse community, engaging with individuals from both sides of the border, to build meaningful and lasting friendships through our wide range of planned activities.”

“As a component of the Good Neighbours Project, ADoPT will collaborate closely with the Senior Citizens Pettigo Luncheon Group. During the Launch Event, Jimmy Baird, a member of the group, delighted attendees with recitations of two poems, ‘Somebody’s Mother’ and ‘I’m Fine’.”

For further information about the project, please contact Natasha McGrath, Project Coordinator, at: adoptpettigo@gmail.com.
