Iranian authorities have reported that at least 71 individuals died in what they claim was an Israeli attack on Evin prison in Tehran on Monday. The prison is known for housing numerous political prisoners.
According to judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir, the victims included prison staff, soldiers, inmates, and visiting family members. The statement was published on the official Mizan news agency website on Sunday.
The Mizan news agency previously confirmed the death of the prison’s top prosecutor in the alleged strike.
Ali Ghanaatkar, whose history of prosecuting dissidents had generated criticism from human rights organizations, will be buried at a shrine in Qom, officials stated.
