The stunning Árainn Mhór – Ailt an Chorráin Blueway is set to officially launch its new promotional videos at an event on Friday, July 4th at 4 pm.

Donegal Tourism Ambassador, Noel Cunningham, will unveil the videos at An Chúltúrlann on Arranmore Island. All are welcome to attend (RSVP details below).

At Leabgarrow Foreshore, Noel will also reveal the official blueway logo, a cormorant, which symbolizes the connection between land, sea, and people.

The launch event, originally scheduled for June, was postponed as a mark of respect following a bereavement.

The Árainn Mhór – Ailt an Chorráin Blueway initiative aims to highlight the beauty and recreational opportunities of Ireland’s first and only coastal Blueway to incorporate the sea.

Connecting Burtonport (Ailt an Chorráin) on the mainland to Arranmore Island (Árainn Mhór), the Blueway provides a mix of land and water-based activities such as walking, cycling, kayaking, sailing, and snorkelling, all while immersing visitors in the breathtaking Donegal landscape.

Experience peace, tranquillity & stunning landscapes, check in with your wellbeing whilst the unique and authentic Árainn Mhór-Ailt an Chorráin Blueway experience charms all of your senses.

The Blueway’s land-based trails offer various options for walkers and cyclists on both Arranmore and the mainland:

    • Slí Árainn Mhór: A 14km loop around Arranmore Island, featuring breathtaking views and a moderate walking experience.
    • The Old Railway Walk: A scenic trail following the former railway route between Burtonport and Letterkenny, with remnants of the old railway infrastructure.
    • Kinballycrowie Loop: A looped walk from Burtonport harbour along the old railway corridor, passing through quiet country lanes and woodlands.
    • Crickamore Loop: A shorter looped walk along a scenic stretch of the old railway corridor, returning via quiet country lanes.

    Water-Based Activities – Arranmore

Visitors can enjoy activities like kayaking, sailing, and snorkelling. Local operators offer equipment rentals and guided tours to enhance the experience. The accredited snorkel trails, the first in Ireland, are particularly noteworthy for their clear waters and vibrant marine life, providing a unique underwater adventure.

Walk, cycle, snorkel, sail or kayak on the Árainn Mhór-Ailt an Chorráin Blueway!

    Getting There

Arranmore Island is accessible year-round by ferry from Burtonport, offering scenic views of the Atlantic and surrounding islands. Ferry services are provided by Arranmore Ferry and The Arranmore Ferry, which is introducing a new vessel, the Arranmore Blu, in 2025 to improve passenger comfort and capacity.
