Donegal’s Altan celebrates an incredible 40 years of touring with two special local shows.
The legendary Celtic band has graced some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and Dublin’s National Concert Hall. They’ve even shared their native music at the iconic Glastonbury Festival.
This summer, they’ll perform two unique concerts: on July 11th at Early’s Bar Arranmore, and on July 13th, the Concert of the Greats at The Marquee, Bruckless.
Altan has consistently been a leading force in traditional Irish music, blending the vibrant energy of their native Donegal-fiddle style with a unique, melodic sensitivity.
After all these years, lead singer and fiddler, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, says the band’s energy still comes from the audience each night.
“Altan has a very loyal following, which is truly amazing,” Mairéad tells Donegal Daily.
“When playing live, we get so much energy and encouragement from our fans and friends. This is truly inspiring as we feel that they really understand what we are about.”
Altan
In 1995, Altan became the first-ever Irish traditional band signed to a major record label, Virgin Records. At the time, The Boston Globe called them “the hottest group in the Celtic realm.”
Altan has shared their music and musicianship with The Chieftains, Dolly Parton, Ricky Skaggs, John Prine, and others. Embarking on their fifth decade, their dedication to Donegal’s musical heritage ensures its longevity.
The band’s founding members, lead singer and fiddler Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Ciaran Curran on bouzouki, and Mark Kelly on guitar, are joined by accordion player Martin Tourish, and the newest member, fiddler and singer Clare Friel.
“I’m really very happy that Altan is still relevant after 40 years,” says Mairéad.
“Longevity is difficult to achieve in the music business, and I’m proud of what we have achieved so far and really feel we have so much more to give.”
“We are looking forward to playing as a band for as long as possible!”
