With the All-Ireland Football final just around the corner, anticipation is high as supporters from Donegal and Kerry prepare for the extensive journey – nearly 300 kilometers – to Croke Park.

Despite their rivalry on the field, Donegal County Council and Kerry County Council are collaborating on a road safety initiative to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip for fans traveling from both counties to and from Dublin.

Football, as a sport, demands high levels of physical exertion, concentration, and focus from its players.

Similarly, long drives require full concentration, physical awareness, and mental alertness, and driver fatigue can compromise these, leading to slower reaction times, impaired concentration, and increased risk of accidents.

A joint social media video, themed around football and road safety, has been released, offering advice to supporters traveling to the match.

The video emphasizes the difference between making a mistake on the pitch and making one on the road.

Pamela Smullen, Road Safety Officer for Donegal County Council, stated, “This weekend is a moment of pride and excitement for both counties. With so many people traveling, our priority is their safe arrival and return home. Long journeys can be taxing, so we advise supporters to plan ahead, allow ample travel time, stay focused, ensure everyone is wearing a seatbelt, and drive responsibly. Whether driving or a passenger, everyone has a role in road safety.”

Declan Keogh, Road Safety Officer for Kerry County Council, commented: “The roads to Croke Park will be incredibly busy from both directions. Keep the speed and hard hits for the players on the field. We urge drivers and passengers to wear their seatbelts with the same pride as their county colors. We also urge motorists to stay focussed when driving, to concentrate on the journey, drive at a safe speed and to take breaks along the route to combat driver fatigue.”
