Arranmore RNLI’s dedicated volunteer crew responded to two separate medical evacuation calls from the island this week.

On Tuesday at 3:45 PM, the lifeboat crew transported a patient from the island’s ambulance to another ambulance waiting in Burtonport, for further assessment at Letterkenny University Hospital. The following day, after concluding a two-hour training session at 8 PM, the crew received another request from the Coast Guard to transfer a patient from Arranmore to Burtonport.

Coxswain Kieran O’Donnell emphasized the importance of continuous training for the crew.

“Our lifeboat crews engage in weekly training exercises, both at sea and on land,” he stated.

“These RNLI training sessions focus on building teamwork, honing technical skills, and reinforcing safe operating procedures. We cover a wide range of topics, from boat handling, search and rescue techniques, and navigation, to radar operation, radio communication, and casualty care. Crews also practice rescue scenarios in conjunction with other emergency services, such as the Coastguard and fire and rescue teams. We are always prepared to respond immediately to any call for assistance.”

Arranmore RNLI members from L-R: mechanic Philip McCauley, Bernard John O’Donnell, John Mc Cafferty and Coxswain Kieran O’Donnell.

Arranmore RNLI recruitment officer and relief mechanic, John McCafferty, welcomed the newest crew member, Bernard John O’Donnell, saying: “This is a fantastic organisation to volunteer for, and we are delighted to welcome Bernard John, who has recently completed his application.”

Bernard John has deep family roots in the lifeboat service. His great-great-grandfather was the coxswain of the first lifeboat stationed on Arranmore in 1883. His great-grandfather was awarded a silver medal in 1941 for his role in the rescue of 18 sailors from the Dutch vessel ‘Stolwijk,’ which ran aground on rocks off Tory Island.

“We encourage anyone aged 18-65 living on Arranmore to visit the lifeboat station and learn about the vital work our crew performs. We are continuously seeking volunteers for various roles, both on land and at sea, offering opportunities for everyone to contribute to saving lives.”
