A man found intoxicated and pushing a bicycle on a busy Letterkenny dual carriageway at night has been fined in court.

Gintaras Jankauskas, 56, of Churchlands, Manorcunningham, previously convicted of attempting to operate a bicycle while drunk, appeared before Letterkenny District Court.

Sergeant Jim Collins informed Judge Éiteáin Cunningham that Gardai were alerted at 9:15 pm on February 20, 2024, to a man pushing a bicycle on the dual carriageway at Dromore, Letterkenny.

Officers located Jankauskas, pushing the bike and wearing dark clothing. According to Sergeant Collins, he was heavily intoxicated, posing a danger to himself and others.

Following his arrest, Jankauskas reportedly cooperated fully with Gardai.

A fixed charge penalty notice (FCPN) was issued but went unpaid.

Sergeant Collins told the court about Jankauskas’s prior conviction for attempting to ride a bicycle while under the influence.

Defense solicitor, Mr. Donough Cleary, remarked, “We have improved as we don’t seem to be riding the bike whilst drunk now.”

Mr. Cleary explained that his client now has employment through a community employment scheme, which presents a “logistical issue.”

He added that Jankauskas has since purchased a high-visibility jacket and initially misunderstood the nature of the fixed charge penalty notice.

It was previously revealed in court that Jankauskas is clinically blind.

Judge Cunningham, through an interpreter, explained to the accused that he had endangered himself and other road users.

Judge Cunningham acknowledged Jankauskas’s past convictions but noted that the current incident did not involve an attempt to cycle.

Jankauskas was convicted under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994, and fined €200, with six months granted to pay.
