The alleged mastermind behind the shooting of a conservative Colombian senator and presidential candidate has been apprehended, nearly a month after the incident, according to law enforcement officials.
Elder Jose Arteaga Hernandez, also known as “Chipi” or “Costeno”, was arrested in a neighborhood in the northwestern part of Bogota, the capital city, National Police Director Major General Carlos Fernando Triana informed reporters.
Authorities previously implicated him and other suspects in being near the Bogota park where Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot in broad daylight on June 7.
Mr. Uribe was delivering a political speech in the park when he was attacked from behind and wounded in the head, allegedly by a minor who was apprehended while fleeing the scene.
Three other individuals have been arrested for their involvement in the logistics and execution of the crime.
The motive behind the attack is still under investigation.
Mr. Uribe, who announced his intention to run in the 2026 presidential election in October, remains in intensive care and has undergone multiple surgeries.
From his position in the Senate, he had become one of President Gustavo Petro’s most outspoken critics.
The attack has been widely condemned in a country with a history of violence where drug cartels and insurgent groups have murdered and kidnapped politicians.
Arteaga is facing charges including attempted aggravated homicide; manufacturing, trafficking, and possession of firearms or ammunition; and using minors to commit crimes.
Interpol issued a red notice for his arrest on Friday.
It was not immediately apparent Saturday if Arteaga had legal representation who could comment on his behalf.
Authorities stated that he would make his initial court appearance over the weekend.
Maj Gen Triana stated last month that Arteaga “has been involved in a life of crime for more than 20 years, performing hit jobs in all types of crimes in Bogota”.
