The community in Letterkenny is mourning the loss of Robert O’Brien, a resident of McNeely Villas in Oldtown, who passed away on Monday.
Robert, aged 66, died peacefully at Letterkenny University Hospital, where he received exceptional care from the staff of Medical 3, following a short illness.
Known for his cheerful personality, Robert was a beloved figure in the area, esteemed for his kindness, gentle nature, and willingness to help others.
Born in Glasgow, Robert returned to Donegal with his family in the early 1970s, settling into the close-knit McNeely Villas community.
He received his primary education in Glasgow and later attended Letterkenny Vocational School in Ard O’Donnell.
Robert’s work life included employment at O’Donnell’s Bakery (a travelling shop alongside his friend Andy Lochlainn) and UNIFI textured yarns, where he cultivated numerous friendships over the years.
Outside of work, Robert cherished gatherings with friends and family, particularly at places like ‘The Hideout’, ‘The Drum Bar’ and, more recently, ‘The Station House Hotel’.
His affable character made him well-liked by many.
Robert had a diverse array of interests, including sports, country and western music, and television soap operas.
A dedicated supporter of Donegal GAA, he enthusiastically celebrated their All-Ireland victories in 1992 and 2012.
He amassed an extensive collection of tapes and records, with Charlie Pride, Johnny Cash, and Kenny Rogers among his favorite artists. Robert was also known for his impromptu singing performances during nights out.
In his younger years, he enjoyed riding his moped to visit cousins in Listillion.
He also possessed a talent for repairing electronic equipment and gadgets during his leisure time.
He enjoyed fixing washing machines, tumble dryers, and other appliances with his friend, the late James ‘Busty’ McMonagle.
Family held a special significance for Robert, and he extended his generosity and kindness to all, especially his nieces and nephews. He loved spending time with his siblings and their families.
Robert was more than a brother; he was a protector, advisor, and cherished friend.
His mother, Vera, with whom he shared his life, passed away on March 5, 2016, leaving a significant void.
His father, Patrick, passed away on March 3, 1981.
Predeceased by his parents, Patrick, and Vera, he is deeply mourned by his brother, Pat (Phil) Dublin; sister, Margaret (Russ) North Carolina; Paul (Dorrie) Derry; and Angela (C.J) The Grange, Glencar, Letterkenny.
Robert will be greatly missed by his nephews, nieces, aunts Madge O’Donnell (England) and Eileen McGonagle (Glasgow), and a wide circle of family, friends, and neighbors.
The remains were reposed at the home of his sister, Angela, and C.J. McGinley, 7 The Grange. Glencar, Letterkenny F92XPF5.
The funeral will be held today, Thursday, July 3rd, at 1pm in St Eunan’s Cathedral, followed by burial in the family plot at New Leck graveyard.
