A 38-year-old man, Brian Nnamdi Ogbo, was charged with manslaughter on Monday in connection with the death of his grandmother in Carrigaline this February.

Mr. Ogbo appeared before Cork District Court, where Detective Garda Thomas Delaney formally charged him with the unlawful killing.

The charge alleges that on February 25, 2025, at 17 Garrydhu Drive, Kilmoney Road, Carrigaline, Co Cork, Brian Nnamdi Ogbo unlawfully killed Stella Ejiatu Nnadi, in violation of Common Law.

Defense solicitor Donal Daly stated that while no bail application was made on Monday, one would be submitted on July 7.

Mr. Daly noted that his client is under the care of a prison psychiatrist and their team. He requested a psychiatric report be prepared for next week, as it may assist the court in considering the upcoming bail application.

Previously, Brian Nnamdi Ogbo was charged with assaulting 82-year-old Stella Nnamdi, causing her harm, on February 23 at his residence at 17 Garrydhu Drive, Kilmoney Road, Carrigaline, Co Cork.

Sergeant Gearóid Davis confirmed that the original assault charge would be withdrawn by the State given the new manslaughter charge.

During the initial bail hearing for the assault charge, Det Garda Tom Delaney testified that the charge related to an assault on the accused’s maternal grandmother, which resulted in her death.

Det Garda Delaney stated that family members informed gardaí that Brian Ogbo suffers from schizophrenia and allegedly produced a knife during the assault.

“It was alleged that he broke into the upstairs bathroom where his grandmother was located and that he dragged her out of the bathroom. He dragged her downstairs. She was off her feet and being dragged headfirst down the stairs and pushed out of the house.

“Nobody required hospitalisation at the time of the occurrence. However, Stella Nnamdi deteriorated and was subsequently taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital on Tuesday February 25, and died later that afternoon,” Det Garda Delaney explained.

During his February bail application, the accused acknowledged his need for a support system and confirmed he received assistance from his family in managing his medications for conditions including schizophrenia, depression, and epilepsy.

Mr. Daly reiterated that a bail application regarding the manslaughter charge would be presented next week.
