New figures reveal a record high of 15,747 people were in emergency accommodation at the end of May.

The Department of Housing reported 10,903 homeless adults at the end of last month.

Additionally, 4,844 children were in emergency accommodation during the same period, marking the highest number ever recorded in Ireland.

May’s total surpasses the previous record of 15,580 people in emergency accommodation, which was set in April.

The Dublin Simon Community stated that while the housing crisis is a political issue, its “most devastating consequence, homelessness, remains overlooked”.

Catherine Kenny, CEO of the Dublin Simon Community, expressed concern that recent government changes to rental rules offered no relief for those experiencing homelessness.

“In light of today’s numbers, stability must be at the forefront in addressing the chaotic housing market with chronic shortages,” Ms Kenny asserted.
