The public conversation often revolves around rising crime rates and overcrowded prisons. But how well do we actually understand the individuals who navigate our criminal justice system?

The Irish Examiner’s in-depth investigation of thousands of court reports from Cork courts provides readers with a compelling look into the challenging – and often tragic – realities within the city.

As part of this investigative work, the three-part podcast series, “Cork Crime and Jail Time,” hosted by Deirdre O’Shaughnessy, uses data-driven insights to explore the factors contributing to incarceration and potential strategies to break the cycle of crime in certain communities.

Episode 1: Analysis of five years of Cork court cases unveils surprising statistics about who ends up in jail. Guests include retired judge Olann Kelleher, who helps us explore the data.

Episode 2: Examining Cork through the lens of crime statistics, the Northside is disproportionately represented.

Experts, including UCC criminologist Orla Lynch and Katherine Harford of Let’s Grow Together, share insights into these trends.

Episode 3: The series highlights that people with “no fixed abode” receive nearly a quarter of all jail sentences in Cork.

Listen to the stories of Marcin and Niall, who are experiencing homelessness in Cork, and gain a deeper understanding of the contributing factors with Kerry Brennan of Cork Simon and other guests.

This podcast series is presented and produced by Deirdre O’Shaughnessy, with research by Ev Duggan and Eoin English, on location recording by Chani Anderson, and editing and sound design by Ivan Rodriguez.
