The Donegal GAA County Board has expressed its disappointment after the request to have their All-Ireland quarter-final match scheduled for Sunday was denied.
The Donegal versus Monaghan game is now confirmed for this Saturday at Croke Park, with a 4pm throw-in time.
The County Board stated tonight that Donegal has played more games than any other county in this year’s championship, totaling eight matches within an 11-week period.
This Saturday’s game will be their ninth, occurring less than 12 weeks after their Ulster Championship Preliminary Round match against Derry on April 6th.
“Given this demanding schedule, we believed it was entirely reasonable and justified to request an extra day of recovery for our players this weekend,” said a County Board spokesperson.
“Coiste Chontae Dhún na nGall finds it regrettable and disappointing that our request was rejected. We believe the welfare of our players was not sufficiently considered in the decision-making process.”
It was widely expected that the Donegal v Monaghan fixture would be held on Sunday, especially given that other qualified counties, such as Kerry and Dublin, played their games last Saturday.
Donegal’s upcoming match will be part of a double-header at Croke Park, with Dublin and Tyrone playing in the second game.
General ticket sales for both games on Saturday will commence at 12 noon on Tuesday, with clubs receiving an allocation.
