Looking back to the start of 2025, what would have constituted a successful year for the Cork footballers? It’s easy to get caught up in the intensity of the championship season and judge everything based solely on the final result. While performance matters, GAA is often viewed in simple terms: win or lose, advance or be eliminated. Analysis usually starts with the final outcome.

Cork’s league campaign saw them secure four wins and suffer three losses. Had they managed just one more victory against Down, Monaghan, or Roscommon, they would have earned promotion. Conversely, one additional defeat could have relegated them to Division 3. Ultimately, Cork finished in their familiar mid-table position. This was largely in line with expectations, although they likely flirted more with relegation than promotion. Overall, it was an unremarkable league campaign.
