An Air India flight was forced to return to Hong Kong shortly after takeoff on Monday due to a technical malfunction mid-flight. This incident occurred just days after a devastating Air India plane crash that resulted in at least 270 fatalities.

Air India released a statement confirming the New Delhi-bound flight’s safe landing in Hong Kong. The aircraft is currently undergoing comprehensive safety checks “as a matter of abundant precaution.”

According to a separate statement from Airport Authority Hong Kong, flight AI315 returned to the city’s airport at approximately 1pm.

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This is the same model of plane that crashed near Ahmedabad, a city in northwestern India, on Thursday. The London-bound flight impacted a medical college hostel in a residential area shortly after takeoff.

The crash resulted in the deaths of 241 passengers and crew members, as well as at least 29 individuals on the ground. Only one passenger survived the tragic incident.

The Indian flag carrier has stated that alternative travel arrangements are being made to transport the affected passengers to their intended destination as quickly as possible.
