An Garda Síochána is being sued by a policing oversight body due to a lack of cooperation in an investigation into the murder of Denis Donaldson, a British agent, nearly 20 years ago outside Glenties.
Fiosrú, the successor to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman’s Commission (GSOC), has informed the Donaldson family of this development.
According to a letter sent to the family, Fiosrú believes that An Garda Síochána has failed to provide requested information essential for their investigation.
Consequently, the ombudsman has decided to initiate legal proceedings in Dublin Circuit Civil Court to compel the disclosure of the required information. The case is currently in its preliminary stages.
Enda McGarrity, the Donaldson family’s solicitor, stated that the Fiosrú investigation has been ongoing for three years.
“We now understand that Fiosrú are commencing legal proceedings against An Garda Síochána arising out of a failure to comply with aspects of the investigation.”
