In a surprising turn of events, Ger Brennan, just three months after guiding Louth to their historic first Leinster Senior Football Championship title in 68 years, has been named the new Dublin senior football manager.
Brennan, a St Vincent’s clubman, resigned from his position with Louth in early July after a successful two-year tenure. He has now been appointed to a three-year term with the Dubs.
He takes over from Dessie Farrell, who resigned after six seasons following Dublin’s All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Tyrone in June. The composition of Brennan’s management team will be announced in due course.
As a player, Brennan secured two All-Ireland senior medals with Dublin (2011 and 2013) before his inter-county retirement in 2015. He also captained St Vincent’s to an All-Ireland senior club title in 2014, adding to his prior club success in the 2008 championship.
Dublin chairman Ken O’Sullivan, in confirming the appointment, stated: “Ger has earned the highest accolades as a Dublin player and enjoys our complete backing to lead the Dublin Senior Football panel as they strive for further achievements in the years ahead. We extend our best wishes to Ger, his team, and the panel, and we eagerly anticipate the 2026 season”.
Brennan’s appointment marks the first time since Tommy Lyons in 2001 that Dublin has been managed by someone who previously managed another county team. Lyons, a native of Mayo, famously led Offaly to provincial senior champions in 1998.
Since 2015, Brennan has served as the Gaelic games executive at UCD. In this role at Belfield, he succeeded his late club-mate, former Dublin selector Dave Billings. He joins fellow St Vincent’s figures Pat Gilroy and Kevin Heffernan in managing the county team.
