A breathtaking humpback whale recently treated onlookers to an unforgettable display off the coast of Teelin this summer.
Passengers aboard Sliabh Liag Boat Tours were left in awe just weeks ago, witnessing the majestic whale’s presence in the bay.
Captain Paddy Byrne, a seasoned tour guide, has encountered countless remarkable sights, but this particular experience stood out.
On that remarkable day, the whale shared its space with minke whales and dolphins, engaging its audience with flips, powerful tail splashes, and impressive exhales.

Paddy, with three decades of charter boat experience and a lifetime of fishing, describes the sights of that July day as indescribable.
“I’m a different man since,” he said.
“It went on for about 45 minutes, you could see them jumping and skipping. It was a magical event to see them, playing only couple of hundred yards in front of you.”
While he’s had previous humpback sightings, and even spotted turtles in the past, Paddy never imagined witnessing such a spectacular display of wildlife so close to home.
“We don’t often go chasing after them, but when they decide to do a bit of people watching on our tours, who are we to object,” he said.
Paddy notes the busy season with sightseeing tours and clarifies that mammal watching trips are not typically offered. However, along the Wild Atlantic Way, surprises are always possible.
From international travelers to local residents, he expresses gratitude for those who join his tours and share his appreciation for the stunning Sliabh Liag cliffs.
“I am overwhelmed by the local support for my boat trips. It’s so much appreciated,” he said.
